The Prince William & Kate Engagement

So the big news around town is that Prince William has finally proposed to his long long long time girlfriend, Kate Middleton. This is big news primarily because the couple have had an on and off again relationship. I’m particularly excited because he proposed right here in Kenya, at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy back in October. A visitor to the remote Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in central Kenya told AFP on condition of anonymity they had seen the 28-year-old prince, the second in line to the British throne, at the reserve on October 19. Lewa, 225 kilometres (140 miles) north of the capital Nairobi, has made headlines for its work with black rhinos, threatened by poachers, and allows visitors to track lions and view big cats, elephants and other animals.

Now for the juice. Apparently, William has given Kate the engagement ring his father, Prince Charles, gave to his mother, Princess Diana. Diana chose an oval blue sapphire engagement ring that weighed in at an astounding 18 carats and was surrounded by 14 small diamonds in an elegant cluster setting. Some people are unhappy with this decision because of the tumultuous relationship William and Kate have had. They have split up at least 6 times in the last 8 years. Of course, everyone will compare Kate to Diana, and of course Kate will fall short because, to be honest, there can never be another Diana.

The ring is now a family heirloom and is the most precious piece in the royal family’s collection of jewels. Prince Charles paid $65,000 for it when he married Princess Diana in 1981. Jewelry expert Michael O’Connor tells UsMagazine.com the same style ring today would be valued at a whopping $150,000. Imagine walking around with that on your finger!

William told the press at St. James’ Palace:

“It is very special to me. It was my way to make sure my mother did not miss out on today and the excitement that we are going to spend the rest of our lives together. The timing is right now, we are both very, very happy.”

I’m wondering, if Kate chooses not to go through with the marriage, will she have to give back the ring?
