MTV Base yesterday revealed the nominees for the 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs). This is a spectacular awards show and music celebration, taking place in South Africa for the first time on 7 June 2014. Held at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC), the awards will air live across the continent at 21:00 CAT on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) and MTV (DStv Channel 130). Kenya’s very own boy band, Sauti Sol, have been nominated in the Best Group category. Reacting to the news, the group had this to say:
Female Kenyan singer Amani is also nominated in the Best Collaboration category for her song Kiboko Changu, which features Ugandan group Radio & Weasel. Another Kenyan nominee is Oscar winning actress Lupita Nyong’o who is nominated in the Personality of the Year category.

Congratulations are in order for red carpet queen Lupita Nyong’o! Not only did she win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 12 Years a Slave, but she also emerged tops in our top ten Oscar fashion looks this year! Fashion houses were literally falling over themselves trying to get her to pick them to dress her for the Oscars. Lupita chose to go with a beautiful baby blue custom Prada gown with a plunging neckline. Lupita, who has become a firm fashion favourite over award season, said she chose the gown as it reminded her of the blue Nairobi sky. She accessorized with Fred Leighton jewelry. The headband caused quite a few ripples on the red carpet. It remains to be seen whether the headband trend will catch on. (more…)
Restaurant week has been a proven tradition amongst many major cities around the World including Cape Town, London, New York and Tokyo. 2014 will see Nairobi’s astounding restaurant scene added to this list. The innaugural Nairobi Restaurant Week will take place from the 30th of January (that’s tomorrow!) until the 6th of February 2014. A full 8 days for you to try as many restaurants as you can. All participating restaurant menus are priced at either Ksh 1250 or Ksh 1750 and include all taxes. Bookings are not compulsory. However, it is always a good idea to make a booking especially if you intend to have your meal at peak business hours.
You can browse through the different menus available from participating restaurants at Eat Out Kenya. From these menus, I’ve come up with my top 5 list that I just have to try. Automatically eliminated were those that did not have a dessert on the menu. Also taken into consideration is the number of options provided and value for money. And, because I am a full blooded Kenyan, there must be some sort of meat based entree. I also had to consider the reviews each restaurant has to whittle down the list to 5. There were so many great options. So my top 5 picks, and their menus for restaurant week are: (more…)
The 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards got off to a soggy start on the red carpet due to a sprinkler mishap. Thankfully, it didn’t affect the beautiful gowns that were on parade. My absolutely favourite look of the evening was worn by 45 year old Naomi Watts who was in a soft gold metallic halterneck slinky Tom Ford gown. She accessorized perfectly with a chunky chain link choker, a gold cuff around her wrist, a metallic Bulgari clutch bag and Jimmy Choos to match. All class. (more…)
There’s nothing like a sexy African man who knows how to dress. Kenyan men, please note that the following is why Nigerian men get all the ladies 🙂 Nigerian artist D’banj, who just recently signed to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D Music family, attended the 2011 BET Awards. D’banj and 2Face emerged joint winners of the Best International Act (Africa) award at the awards held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, June 26. D’banj looked good enough to eat in a velour green blazer matched with a pair of Christian Louboutin Mika Raja flats ($2,395) from their Spring/Summer 2011 Collection. The Billboard Music Awards red carpet was a bit dull but it did offer us some great looks. My favourite was Kelly Rowland as she stepped out in a pink Herve Leger bondage dress paired with nude colored heels. Her body looks amazing! Check out more red carpet pics after the break. (more…)
That Beyonce reign just won’t let up! She tore the stage at the Billboard Music Awards on Saturday night with her performance of “Who Run The World (Girls)”. The performance, which began with Beyonce declaring “Men have been given the chance to rule the world but ladies our revolution has begun. Let’s build a nation women everywhere run the world!”, was filled with special effects and tons of dancers.
After she performed, her mother Tina Knowles and nephew Julez presented her with the first ever Billboard Millennium Award. During her acceptance speech, she thanked her mother and father for “teaching me about the music industry [and] about work ethic and drive”. She also thanked her former group members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams as well as the original members of Destiny’s Child. “I’d like to thank the original members of Destiny’s Child, LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson.” Maybe now they can put the past behind them and work on that Destinys Child reunion 🙂
Her speech ended with a special thanks to her husband Jay-z who was smiling in the audience. “I’d like to thank my best friend. I don’t want to put you on the spot because I know they probably putting the camera in your face right now but I love me some Jay-Z“. Too cute!
Check out more pics of her performing and accepting the award after the break. (more…)
