Gabrielle Union opened up about how she overcame being raped at gunpoint aged 19 on The View yesterday, saying that she chose not to be a victim. The Being Mary Jane star sat with The View hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Jenny McCarthy and Sherri Shepherd, and talked about this very difficult period in her life. Ms Union had taken a summer job at a Payless shoe store in California, and was just closing up when a man robbed the shop and sexually assaulted her at gunpoint.
Sherri: You were raped at gunpoint and you went through a period of time when you felt like the victim, and rightfully so. And you had an epiphany where you decided you didn’t want to be that anymore. I want to know what happened when you had that epiphany.
Gabrielle: I got sick of people letting me off the hook. Because being a victim is so comfortable. People give you attention, people are nurturing…they’re basically the way you’ve always wanted them to be your whole life without something bad happening. So when something catastrophic happens in your life, everyone rallies around you and you’re getting all the attention and love and support that you always wanted, but it’s not for something positive. And I hated that. I hated feeling like a victim. I hated the cloak of victimhood. And I realized that they were gonna allow me to be a victim and not succeed, and not achieve any of my goals or not step outside of the box. It makes you lazy and I wanted that cloak of victimhood off. And I was like I wanna embrace being a survivor. (more…)
Yes, I know… After the debacle that is Dwyane Wade having a baby while on a “break” from Gabrielle Union, she is the last person I thought could give relationship advice. However, in her latest interview with Glamour magazine, I’m surprised by how much sense she makes. This is a classic case of do as I say, not as I do. The star of BET’s original scripted TV series Being Mary Jane, shares her big relationship DOs and DONTs:
DO forget your “type.” It worked for me. When I met Dwyane, his “résumé” looked like crap: athlete, going through a divorce, nine years younger than me. None of that screamed, “Let’s have a lasting relationship.” Then, after I had a heart-crushing breakup with yet another immature jerk, I thought, it can’t be any worse if I date a fetus. Let’s just see what happens. Turned out he’d been on his own since he was 15. He had wisdom that comes with facing an insane amount of adversity. He’s sweet, funny, honest about his shortcomings. When I put my preconceived notions to the side, I found someone cool.
DON’T put up with a friend-versus-boyfriend tug-of-war. Some friends act possessive and say, “You’re not spending enough time with me.” Huh? Remember when we made our vision boards and the dude was in the middle? You’re supposed to be happy for me. Thankfully, my girls are like, “High-five!” And D likes to be around them too. If there’s weirdness, either something’s wrong with the friends—or the boy. Investigate. And sift accordingly. (more…)
After Siohvaughn’s lawsuit, Gabrielle Union has released a statement through her attorney. This is just too messy… For Ms. Union, this is worrying because such scandals, especially for women, are not looked on favourably by the public…which would affect her career. And we all know her career is not yet as hot as she’d like. BTW Why are there double standards? Do you think it’s wrong to judge Gabby harshly for breaking up a marriage? Pop the top for her statement. (more…)
Just when you think celebrities cannot shock you, they go and top their ish with some more dumb ish. I had decided not to post any more celeb divorce stories. But this ish right here!!! So just to catch you guys up, there have been rumours for years that Gabrielle Union is NBA player, Dwayne Wade’s jumpoff. I’ve generally given that rumour a mean side eye…until now. Seems Siovaughn has decided to sue Gabrielle for “alienation of affection”. Before you laugh, just keep in mind that there does exist such a law. Furthermore, remember that woman who successfully sued her husband’s jumpoff for breaking up her marriage? Back in March, Cynthia Shackelford, 60, won a $9 million judgment against Anne Lundquist, 49, for wrecking her marriage. A judge decided that Shackelford was entitled to millions for her emotional distress and denial of access to her husband’s affection due to Lundquist’s interference. Sooner or later, Gabrielle Union was going to get caught up in this mess. Ladies, a married man is not someone you want to mess with, even if he is separated from his wife. Pop the top for all the messy details. (more…)
