It’s that time again when Forbes releases their annual Cash Kings of Hip Hop list. For the third year in a row, Jay-Z tops the list with an estimated revenue of $37 million in the last year. Jay-Z who unveiled his long-awaited collaboration with Kanye West – Watch the Throne this week, continues to reap the benefits of a 10-year $150 million Live Nation deal, as well as stakes in the New Jersey Nets, the 40/40 Club chain, ad firm Translation and others. This year marked the first time he out-earned wife Beyonce since their marriage in 2008. In last year’s list, his earnings were estimated at $63 million.
Touring was one of the many revenue streams they looked at to come up with the Cash Kings list, which charts pretax earnings for all living artists whose work is primarily classified as hip-hop or rap. The estimates also include income from record sales, digital downloads, films, merchandise sales, endorsements, books and other ventures; management, agent and attorney fees are not deducted. Earnings were calculated for the period from May 2010 to May 2011 and based on data from Pollstar, Nielsen SoundScan, the RIAA and individual record labels, as well as interviews with numerous lawyers, media buyers, managers and many of the artists themselves.

Gwen Stefani graces Elle Magazine’s May 2011 Women in Music issue. Can you believe she’s 41 and looking this hot? I’ve been such a fan of hers since the very beginning. In fact, I remember the first time I saw the video for No Doubt’s Don’t Speak. I was speechless. She was something fresh, and just so cool. Gwen is wearing a stretch wool dress with leather trim from Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci with her own earrings on the cover. She’s featured along with other women in music such as Adele, Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Hudson, Aretha Franklin and even little Willow Smith. Gwen shares her thoughts on her marriage, her vanity, and what she thinks about today’s pop stars, specifically Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Katy Perry:
On writing hits: “I do! Why wouldn’t you want that many people listening to the songs that you wrote? There’s no way to go back after you have had it. So the intentions of even the solo records were always about trying to write those guilty-pleasure albums that just get in your head and you can’t get out. I’m not cool, I’m not into the B-sides. Prince, who is one of my idols, gave me some advice when I worked with him: “Have you ever just tried writing a hit? Like, don’t just try writing a song, try and write a hit song.” I remember him saying that and me thinking, Yeah, you’re right. Why would you write anything else?” (more…)
Nicki Minaj is on the cover of Black Book Magazine. I love Nicki because she makes you look. Not in freakazoid Gaga way. She’s just interesting and something fresh in the hip hop scene. Yeah I know some people think she bit off from Lil’ Kim. The only similarity I see is the different coloured wigs. Lyrically and stylistically they are so different. A plus for her is that my boo loves her…and he is strictly old school so she must be doing something right. Check out an excerpt from the interview where she discusses many topics including her twitter frenemies, the Lady Gaga Comparisons and Diddy rumors. I didn’t even know there were Diddy rumours eeeewwww. There are also pics from the shoot which are as colourful as only Nicki can do it.

When I started making those weird voices, a lot of people told me how whack it was. What the fuck are you doing?’ they’d say. ‘Why do you sound like that? That doesn’t sound sexy to me.’ And then I started saying, Oh, that’s not sexy to you? Good. I’m going to do it more. Maybe I don’t want to be sexy to you today. (more…)
Just when I thought Kanye West was getting back to normal, he goes and pulls another crazy stunt. It seems the video for his song, Monster, will be different (for lack of a better word). Very different. Select scenes from his new music video ‘Monster’ hit the web yesterday. This video is very creepy. If his intention is to get the Illuminati rumours going again, I think he’s outdone himself.
In one scene, Kanye is shown lounging on a bed with a collection of dead bodies lying next to him. He clumsily makes out with one corpse like some kind of twisted, psychotic serial killer. The video also features rappers Jay Z, Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross — who, in another macabre scene, smokes a cigar while sitting in a chair with dead bodies literally hanging around him.
Kanye’s exceptional CD, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, is in stores now. It was actually awarded 5 mics by the Source magazine. What I’ve heard is also pretty good. However, I just can’t deal with this mess. Some may think it’s creativity, I just think it’s sick. See more stills after the break. (more…)
The debate has always been fierce about who should wear the crown of Greatest Rapper Of All Time. Kanye West was interviewed by Angie Martinez of Hot 96 yesterday. Angie asked Kanye who he looks to as someone who makes him work harder. You’ll be surprised to know that the man with the humongous ego did not give his own name. He responded: (more…)

Robin Thicke is the latest artist to collaborate with Nicki Minaj on a song titled “Shakin It For Daddy”. The interesting thing about the song is that it was Jay-z’s idea for Robin to snag Nicki for a verse:
“It was Jay’s idea,” Thicke said about how Nicki Minaj came to be on “Shakin’ It 4 Daddy.” “We were in the studio, and I played him the whole album. He was like, ‘You should get Nicki Minaj on that. She’s got that voice. She’s got that swag.’ So I leaned over and was like, ‘Somebody get Nicki Minaj on the phone! Jay-Z said so!’ Next thing you know, we called Nicki. She was excited. But once we told her it was Jay-Z’s idea to get her on the track, she started screaming on the phone. She was all excited. She’s a super, super talent. I can’t wait to do a video with Nicki. There’s a power in her. It’s not just that she’s sexy and that’s the only way she can get you to like her. She’s got charm — not just sex. Some women may use sex to get what they want; others have charm. She’s got charm.
