Iman for Scene Magazine
58 year old supermodel and supermogul Iman is featured in the current issue of SCENE magazine. Photographed by Douglas Friedman, Iman proves that she’s still got it! When I grow up, I want to be her. In the interview, she talks about modeling and her expanding business empire.
On how she became a pro at modeling: “Through the years, I’ve learned what works for me. Most importantly, I can see in my head the final shot, so the objective is to create something original and modern, to serve the photographer’s vision. I learned on the job. I paid attention to details. I looked at old photographs. And I made sure that I had control over my image. I’ve always believed that images are a model’s currency. So I always wanted to have some control and have a say about my images. What I know is that photography and the business of images is a mirror in which we see ourselves—who we are and who we can be. IMAN Cosmetics Partners With Somali Twin Sisters
Supermodel and cosmetics guru Iman has announced IMAN Cosmetics’ partnership with Mataano, the chic fashion design label with a global flavor. Mataano, founded by Somali twin sisters Ayaan and Idyl Mohallim, will debut its new partnership during their Fall 2012 runway show with IMAN as the lead sponsor. “I saw in the twins the drive and inspiration I had at that point in my life. Our shared Somali background and creative visions are a natural fit,” Iman, CEO and Founder of IMAN Cosmetics said in a press statement. “We’re confident this is just the beginning of a successful and thriving partnership,” Iman added. “I’m grateful to have reached a certain point in my life and career where I can inspire young, motivated women to follow their dreams, take a risk, and never accept defeat.”
As part of the new partnership, the Mataano founders will become brand ambassadors for IMAN. They will also work with the brand to assist with future global events, Fashion Week shows, a limited editorial color collection and IMAN’s Fall 2012 campaign.
“It’s an honor to represent and have the support of a makeup giant like IMAN Cosmetics,” Idyl Mohallim said in a statement. “IMAN Cosmetics is about providing options for all different shades of skin and acknowledging and addressing variety in beauty and cosmetics.” Her sister, Ayaan, also stressed the importance of ensuring that their runway models represent the diversity of Mataano’s brands and that the support of IMAN would assist in completing that look.
Originally from Somalia, Ayaan and Idyl relocated to Washington D.C. with their family for a better life. (more…)
Age Does Not Discriminate…
Women are absolutely terrified of aging. You only need to take a walk to the beauty store and look at the cash cow that is anti-aging products. I won’t lie, I’ve recently changed my beauty routine because I’ve heard that when you get into your late twenties, your age starts to show…wrinkles, frown lines and all that good stuff. In November last year, I erred when I said Iman does not age and she must have a beauty secret she’s not sharing. Well, now we know that her secret is makeup. Today I saw a picture of Iman, and now I know that no matter what you do, age is going to get you. You can apply all the creams and pastes and masks that are available (and they’re really expensive!) but eventually your age will show. Iman was spotted up and about in Soho doing a bit of shopping. Iman is looking stunning in this shoot for Harpers Bazaar. I wonder what her secret is. She just never seems to age. And she doesn’t even look like she uses botox, surgery, etc. I’m so jealous… I think I’ve found my wedding dress. See what I’m talking about after the break. Simon Doonan: How many times a day do you Google yourself?
Iman: Every five minutes. I simply can’t take my eyes off myself. Kidding! I would rather Google other people than Google myself.
SD: Have you ever thrown a cell phone at anyone?
Iman: No! And if anyone threw one at me, it would come right back at them like a boomerang. If I feel frustrated in a situation, I take a deep breath and walk away. (more…)
3 Hot Men On Essence October Cover
Ladies please make sure you grab your copy of Essence Mag’s October issue. On the cover they have Blair Underwood, Boris Kodjoe and Lance Gross. These 3 dashing men will be speaking about their love for black women. I think Essence is trying to make up for the time when they featured Reggie Bush in their “Black Men, Love and Relationships” issue (he was dating a non-black woman, Kim Kardashian at the time). I think it’s time for men to stop justifying who they are in love with. I could care less who you’re sleeping with. I just want to see you with your shirt off 🙂

Iman Receives Fashion Icon Award
Iman was honored with the Fashion Icon Award on Monday night by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. This is an award given to “an individual whose signature style has had a profound influence on fashion.” Iman is almost 55 years old but could even pass for twenty something… I’m jealous 🙂
She was recently featured in a New York Times article which chronicles her journey from Nairobi, where she was attending university when she was discovered by photographer Peter Beard, to her current success as an entrepreneur, covering her three decades as a model revered by fashion designers and publications, as well as her marriage to David Bowie.
She tells the well-documented story of how she arrived in New York in 1975, the daughter of a Somalian diplomat. She spoke five languages but had never worn makeup or high heels. (more…)
